Sump Pump Battery Backup: Why Every Mesquite Homeowner Needs One

Your sump pump stops working the moment you need it most. A severe thunderstorm knocks out power across Mesquite, and the primary pump goes dead. Groundwater rises into the crawl space. This is not unusual for North Texas. DFW’s severe storm season runs from April through September. Thunderstorms frequently produce two to four inches of rain in under an hour. That volume overwhelms drainage around the foundation and drives groundwater into crawl spaces and slab perimeters.

Mesquite homes are built on slab-on-grade or crawl-space foundations over North Texas expansive clay soil. When heavy rain saturates the clay, it swells and directs water toward the lowest point. In crawl-space homes, that point is the sump pit. When the pump has no power, the pit overflows.


How Does a Sump Pump Battery Backup Work?

A battery backup is a second pump installed in the same sump pit alongside your primary pump. It connects to a rechargeable battery and a charger that keeps the battery topped off from your home’s electrical system.

When the power goes out, the backup pump activates automatically through its own float switch. The float sits slightly higher than the primary pump’s float. During normal operation, the primary pump handles the water before it reaches the backup’s activation level. When the primary fails (power outage, mechanical failure, or overwhelmed capacity), the water rises to the backup float, and the secondary pump takes over.

The backup pump discharges water through the same or a separate discharge line as the primary pump. A check valve on each line prevents water from flowing backward into the pit.


Battery Backup vs. Water-Powered Backup: Which Is Right?

Two types of backup systems are available. Each has clear strengths and limitations.

Battery backup systems use a rechargeable deep-cycle battery (lead-acid, AGM, or lithium iron phosphate) to power a secondary pump. They work in any home with a sump pit, regardless of the municipal water supply. They are the more common choice for Mesquite homes.

Cost: $600 to $2,000 installed. Battery type drives the price range. Lead-acid batteries cost $100 to $200 and last two to three years. AGM batteries cost $150 to $300 and last three to five years. LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate) batteries cost $200 to $500 and last five to ten years.

Runtime: 6 to 72 hours on a full charge, depending on battery capacity and how often the pump cycles. In most DFW storm events, a quality battery backup provides 12 to 24 hours of protection. That covers the typical Oncor power restoration window.

Maintenance: Test the backup every three months. Check the battery charge level. Replace lead-acid batteries every two to three years. Replace AGM batteries every three to five years. LiFePO4 requires the least maintenance and has the longest service life.

Water-powered backup systems use municipal water pressure to create suction that removes water from the sump pit. They require no electricity and no battery. As long as the city water supply has pressure, they run without limit.

Cost: $300 to $1,000 installed. Lower upfront cost than battery systems, but they use municipal water during operation. Each gallon of water removed from the pit uses approximately one gallon of city water.

Runtime: Unlimited, as long as municipal water pressure holds. This is the primary advantage over battery systems.

Limitations: Water-powered backups will not work in homes on well water. They require a nearby cold water supply line and a backflow prevention device (required by TCEQ and the City of Mesquite). They pump fewer gallons per hour than battery systems. In DFW, the risk is that municipal water pressure can drop during heavy neighborhood demand in a major storm. If pressure falls below the minimum threshold, the water-powered pump loses effectiveness at the exact moment you need it.

Which to choose. For most Mesquite homes, a battery backup is the more reliable option. It works independently of the water supply, provides strong flow rates, and covers the 12- to 24-hour outage window that DFW storms typically produce. A water-powered system makes sense as a secondary layer for homeowners who want protection during extended multi-day outages beyond what a battery can sustain.


What Does a Sump Pump Battery Backup Cost in Mesquite?

Battery backup system (standalone): $600 to $2,000 installed. This adds a secondary pump and battery to your existing primary sump pump.

Combo system (primary + backup in one unit): $1,000 to $3,000 installed. Replaces the primary pump and includes a built-in battery backup. A good option when the existing primary pump is aging and both need replacement.

Water-powered backup: $300 to $1,000 installed. Lower upfront cost, but requires a cold water supply line near the pit, a backflow preventer, and ongoing water usage during operation.

Smart monitoring add-on: $100 to $300. Wi-Fi-connected sensors alert your phone when the backup activates, the battery is low, or water levels are rising. Worth the cost for homeowners who travel or have a rental property.

Battery replacement (ongoing): $100 to $200 every two to three years for lead-acid. $150 to $300 every three to five years for AGM. $200 to $500 every five to ten years for LiFePO4.


How Long Will a Battery Backup Run During a Power Outage?

Runtime depends on three factors: battery capacity, pump size, and how much water is entering the pit.

In a light rain, the pump cycles infrequently. A fully charged AGM battery can sustain the backup for 24 to 72 hours under light cycling conditions. In a heavy DFW thunderstorm with constant water inflow, the pump runs more often. Expect 6 to 12 hours of protection from a standard AGM battery under heavy cycling.

LiFePO4 batteries hold more usable capacity and maintain voltage better under load. They deliver 20 to 40 percent more runtime than a lead-acid or AGM battery of similar amp-hour rating.

If the battery handles that scenario, it handles everything else.”


When Should You Install a Battery Backup?

Install a backup if any of these apply:

Your home has a sump pump and no backup. The primary pump is a single point of failure. One tripped breaker, one mechanical jam, or one power outage turns a working system into a flooded crawl space.

Your area loses power during storms. Mesquite is served by Oncor. Severe weather events in April and May 2026 caused widespread outages lasting hours to days across the DFW service area. If you have experienced even one storm-related outage, a backup is justified.

Your primary pump is older than five years. Sump pumps have a typical service life of seven to ten years. As the primary pump ages, the probability of mechanical failure during a storm increases. A backup provides coverage during the transition period.

You have a crawl space with moisture history. Crawl-space homes in Mesquite sit on expansive clay that shifts with soil moisture. What Maintenance Does a Battery Backup Need?

A battery backup is not a set-and-forget system. It requires periodic attention to stay reliable.

Quarterly testing. Pour a bucket of water into the sump pit to trigger the backup pump’s float switch. Confirm the pump activates, moves water, and shuts off when the water level drops. If the pump does not activate, the float switch or the pump itself needs service.

Battery health checks. Check the battery charge indicator on the charger unit every month. Most charger units have a green/yellow/red light or digital readout. A battery that will not hold a full charge needs replacement before storm season, not during one.

Battery replacement on schedule. Do not wait for the battery to fail. Replace it at the manufacturer’s recommended interval: two to three years for lead-acid, three to five for AGM, five to ten for LiFePO4. A dead battery during a storm is the same as having no backup at all.

Annual professional inspection. Have a licensed plumber inspect the check valves, discharge lines, float switches, and overall pit condition once a year. This inspection is best scheduled in March or April, before DFW’s peak storm season begins.
