How Hydro Jetting Actually Works
Hydro jetting pushes high-pressure water through a specialized nozzle threaded into the drain or sewer line. Residential machines typically operate between 3,500 and 4,000 PSI at 4 to 18 gallons per minute. Commercial trailer-mounted units go higher — up to 4,000+ PSI at 18 to 25 GPM for heavy commercial lines.
The nozzle does the work. Forward-facing jets cut through the clog and strip the pipe wall clean. Rear-facing jets propel the hose forward through the pipe while pushing debris back toward the access point where it flushes out. Different nozzle types handle different problems: a chisel nozzle for hard scale, a rotating nozzle for grease coating, a cutting head with retractable blades for root masses.
The fundamental difference between hydro jetting and mechanical cabling (snaking): cabling punches a hole through a clog. Jetting strips it off the wall. After a jetting job done correctly, the inside of the pipe is clean — not just open. That’s why jetting handles recurring grease, scale, and root problems that snaking can only temporarily clear.

The nozzle directs jets forward to cut buildup and backward to propel the hose through the pipe while flushing debris out behind it. Unlike mechanical cabling (which punches a hole through a clog), hydro jetting strips the inside wall of the pipe clean, removing grease coating, scale, and root mat that cabling leaves behind.
Sometimes yes, sometimes no — it depends on what the camera shows. Pre-1980 Mesquite homes commonly have cast iron drain stacks and clay sewer mains. If the cast iron still has reasonable wall thickness, jetting is safe and very effective at removing scale. If the cast iron has corroded to paper-thin walls, jetting can blow holes through the pipe. Same for clay: if the joints are still intact, jetting cleans roots out cleanly. If the line is partially collapsed or bellying severely, jetting can make things worse. Hydro jetting is the right call for grease-coated kitchen drains, scale buildup in older cast iron, root mat across multiple joints, and recurring backups where snaking opens the line briefly but the clog returns. Cabling punches a hole through buildup; jetting strips it off the pipe wall. For most main sewer line cleanings on lines we've never inspected, we recommend camera inspection first, then the technique that fits what we see.

Commercial trailer-mounted units go higher (up to 4,000+ PSI at 18-25 GPM). That pressure is safe for sound pipes in good condition. It is NOT safe for pipes that are already failing — which is why we camera-inspect first. The pressure rating that matters isn't on the jet machine; it's on the pipe wall thickness.
Camera inspection: 30 to 60 minutes on-site. Single fixture drain jetting (kitchen line, bathroom branch): 30 to 60 minutes. Main sewer line jetting from a cleanout to the city tap: typically 1 to 2 hours including post-jet camera verification. Commercial or heavily root-intruded lines can run 2 to 4 hours. We give a specific timeline in the flat-rate quote after the camera inspection — no surprise extensions.
It reduces recurring clogs significantly because it removes the buildup mechanical cabling leaves behind — the grease film, the scale layer, the root mat that holds the next clog together. But hydro jetting doesn't prevent the underlying cause. If your kitchen drain has a grease problem, jetting buys you 6 to 18 months before the buildup returns. If your sewer line has root intrusion at a separated joint, jetting buys you 1 to 3 years before roots regrow through the same joint. Permanent fixes require addressing the source — grease trap installation for kitchens, joint sealing or section repair for roots.
