Most plumbing disasters come down to seconds. A pipe bursts, water pours in, and the difference between a quick cleanup and a flooded floor is knowing where the shut-off valve is before it happens.

Know Your Shut-Off Valves
When water is spraying, you do not want to be hunting for the valve. Find these now.
Locate the main water shut-off valve for the whole house. It is usually near the water meter, in a garage, or where the main line enters the home.
Find the individual shut-off valves for each toilet, sink, the washing machine, the dishwasher, and the water heater.
Test that the main valve turns. Old valves can seize. Better to learn that today than during a flood.
Tools and Supplies to Keep on Hand
A small kit handles most first-response situations until a plumber arrives.
Basic plumbing toolkit: pipe wrench, basin wrench, pliers, and screwdrivers.
A cup plunger for sinks and a flange plunger for toilets.
Hand auger or a small drain snake for minor clogs.
Buckets and towels for catching and soaking up leaks.
Plumber’s tape for sealing threaded connections.
Temporary pipe repair clamps or tape to slow a leak until help arrives.
Keep the Right Contacts Ready
In an emergency you want the number in your hand, not buried in a search.
Save the number of a trusted licensed plumber in your phone.
Keep it posted somewhere visible, like inside a kitchen cabinet, so anyone at home can find it.
Practice Before You Need It
The best plan only works if everyone knows it.
Walk every household member to the main shut-off valve and show them how to turn it off.
Do a quick refresher once a year, especially before winter freezes when burst pipes are most common.
When to Call a Plumber
Some emergencies are not a wait-and-see. Call right away if you have any of these.
Water you cannot stop even after closing a shut-off valve.
A burst or frozen pipe.
Sewage backing up into a drain, tub, or toilet.
The smell of gas, which is not a plumbing fix. Leave the home first, then call your gas company and 911 from a safe distance.
