One slow drain or all of them
This is the first thing to work out, and you can do it yourself before you call.
One fixture is slow and everything else drains normally. The blockage is local, in that fixture’s trap or branch line. Usually straightforward.
Several fixtures are slow, or the lowest drains in the house back up when you run water elsewhere, the main line is the problem. Water takes the path of least resistance, so a blocked main shows up first in a tub, a shower pan, or a floor drain rather than a sink.
Gurgling from one drain when you use another means air is being pulled through the system because water cannot move freely. That is a main line symptom too.
If waste is coming up into a tub or shower, stop running water anywhere in the house and call. That is not a drain cleaning call, it is a backup.
Cabling and hydro jetting are not the same thing
Cabling, also called snaking, runs a rotating steel cable down the line and punches through the blockage. It restores flow quickly and it is the right tool for a single obstruction, a wad of wipes, or a root mass that needs cutting.
What cabling does not do is clean the pipe wall. On a scaled cast iron line in an older north Grand Prairie home, cabling bores a channel through the buildup and everything around it stays exactly where it was. Flow comes back, and then it goes away again, often within weeks. That is the cycle a lot of homeowners are stuck in without knowing why.
Hydro jetting uses high pressure water through a specialized nozzle to scour the pipe wall back toward its original diameter. It removes scale, grease, and soft buildup rather than drilling through it. On the right line it is the difference between fixing the problem and postponing it.
Hydro jetting is not right for every pipe. A line that is already cracked, badly corroded, or collapsed should not be jetted, which is exactly why we look before we choose.
North Grand Prairie drains fail differently than south Grand Prairie drains
North of Interstate 30, around downtown, Dalworth, and Bear Creek, most homes date from 1940 to 1969. Those houses were built with cast iron drain lines, and many still have them.
Cast iron does not usually fail by cracking. It fails by scaling. The inside surface corrodes and builds a rough, thick layer that narrows the pipe from within, sometimes to a fraction of its original diameter. Everything catches on that rough surface. The homeowner experiences it as drains that get slower every year and clogs that come back faster each time.
Those same neighborhoods have mature trees on larger lots, which is pleasant to live with and hard on drain lines. Roots find the joints in older cast iron and clay pipe, get in through hairline gaps, and grow into the flow.
South Grand Prairie, built from the 1990s onward after Joe Pool Lake filled, has PVC drain lines. PVC does not scale and roots have a much harder time getting in. What it does instead is move. North Texas clay swells and shrinks through the year, and a PVC line can settle into a low spot, called a belly, where water and solids stop draining fully and start collecting. From inside the house that looks exactly like a recurring clog, because it is, but cabling it will never fix it.
When we recommend a camera
If a drain has backed up more than once, guessing gets expensive.
A sewer camera inspection runs 150 to 400 dollars and shows the actual condition of the line: whether it is scaled cast iron, whether roots are in it, whether there is a belly holding water, whether a joint has separated, or whether the pipe has collapsed. It also locates the problem to a specific distance from the cleanout.
That matters because those five problems have five different solutions and four of them are not drain cleaning. Paying for a camera once is usually cheaper than paying to cable the same line three more times.
Meet James Armstrong
Meet the Master Plumber Serving Grand Prairie: James Armstrong
James Armstrong has been a Mesquite-resident Master Plumber since 1995. What began as helping neighbors fix leaky faucets turned into a career — and eventually a family business, built on one simple rule: treat people right, do the job with integrity, and always stand behind your work. Today, James and his crew serve Grand Prairie, Sachse, Garland, and the broader DFW metro from the Mesquite headquarters at 844 Dalworth Dr.
“In thirty years of plumbing across the DFW metro, including Grand Prairie, the drain calls almost always come down to two things: tree roots in the older neighborhoods, and grease and hair buildup in the newer developments. We camera-inspect first, then choose hydro-jetting or snaking based on what we actually see — not on what gets you to the highest invoice.”

Because the clog is a symptom rather than the problem. A line that blocks repeatedly usually has scaled cast iron, root intrusion, or a low spot holding water. Cabling clears the blockage without changing any of those conditions, so it returns. A camera inspection at 150 to 400 dollars identifies which one you have.
Cabling runs a steel cable down the line and punches through the blockage, which restores flow fast. Hydro jetting uses high pressure water to scour the pipe wall back toward full diameter, removing scale and grease rather than drilling through them. Cabling treats the clog. Jetting treats the pipe.
Very likely. Homes built between 1940 and 1969 were built with cast iron, and many still have the original lines. After 60 or more years those pipes have usually scaled significantly, which is why clogs come back faster each time.
Yes. They are the most common main line blockage we remove. They pass through the toilet and then fail to break down, catching on anything rough inside the pipe. In older scaled cast iron there is a great deal for them to catch on.
Newer homes have PVC drain lines, which do not scale and resist roots well. What they do is move with the soil. North Texas clay shrinks and swells through the year and a line can settle into a low spot that holds water and solids. That reads as a recurring clog from inside the house, and cabling will not correct it.
Yes. Restaurants and commercial kitchens generally need hydro jetting on a schedule rather than service calls when a line blocks, because grease accumulation is continuous rather than occasional.
