Emergency Plumbing in Arlington, TX
If water is running and you cannot stop it, do this before you keep reading.
Shut off the water. Most Arlington homes have a main shutoff where the supply line enters the house, often in the garage or on an exterior wall facing the street. For one fixture, the stop valve is under the sink or behind the toilet.
If you smell gas, leave the building first with everyone in it, including pets. Do not flip switches or use your phone inside. Once you are outside and away, call 911. Then call Atmos Energy at 866-322-8667. Atmos is the gas utility for Arlington and will make the line safe. Call us at 214-918-6109 for the repair once the area has been cleared.
For everything else, call 214-918-6109.

Which Arlington Emergencies Belong to the City
Arlington Water Utilities runs its own emergency line, 817-459-5900, answered at any hour. Use it for a suspected main break, a leak in the street or at the meter, or a sewer overflow.
Water coming up in the street, or a leak at the meter box
That is usually a city main or the city side of the meter. Call 817-459-5900. A plumber cannot repair a city main.
No water or low pressure across the whole street
Check with the city first. If a main is down or crews are working, we will find nothing wrong inside your house.
Sewage overflowing from a manhole or into the street
Call the city.
Sewage coming up inside your house while the street is fine
That is almost always your line. Call us. Once the line is clear, a sewer camera inspection at 150 to 400 dollars shows what caused it.
What Arlington Learned in February 2021
During Winter Storm Uri, on 17 February 2021, the City of Arlington issued a boil water notice for the whole city. The reason it gave was unprecedented demand and a possible major water main break, which caused a pressure drop across the distribution system. Under state rules, a pressure drop like that requires a boil notice. It was lifted on 20 February.
Two lessons from that week still apply to every Arlington homeowner.
A burst pipe is not only your problem in a hard freeze. Broken lines running at once in homes and businesses are part of what drains a city system. Knowing where your main shutoff is, and being able to turn it, matters more in a freeze than at any other time.
The flood comes on the thaw. Ice splits a pipe while everything is frozen, so nothing leaks yet. When the ice plug melts, the water reaches the split all at once, often while nobody is home. If you lost pressure during a freeze, shut off the water at the main before things warm up.
After any boil notice is lifted, follow the city’s instructions in the notice. The usual steps are to run each cold tap for several minutes, throw out ice made during the notice, and change refrigerator and under-sink filters.
What Fails in Arlington Homes
Around UT Arlington and downtown, 1950s and 1960s. The oldest neighborhoods in the city, in 76010, 76011, 76012 and 76013. Original cast iron drains under the slab scale and crack, and some homes still have galvanized supply pipe. The emergency is usually a main line backup or a supply line that has finally rusted through.
West and southwest Arlington, 1970s and 1980s. Copper supply lines under the slab are now forty to fifty years old, the age when pinhole and slab leaks start. Some homes from the late 1970s on used polybutylene, which tends to fail at a fitting with no warning.
South Arlington, 1980s to 2000s. In 76001, 76002, 76017 and 76018, many water heaters sit in the attic. When an attic tank fails, you find out through the ceiling.
Everywhere. Tarrant County clay swells when it rains and shrinks in a dry summer, and that movement is behind most of the slab leaks we find. A leak you can hear running with every fixture off is soaking the ground under your foundation.
Meet James Armstrong
Meet the Master Plumber Serving Arlington: James Armstrong
James Armstrong has been a Mesquite-resident Master Plumber since 1995. What began as helping neighbors fix leaky faucets turned into a career — and eventually a family business, built on one simple rule: treat people right, do the job with integrity, and always stand behind your work. Today, James and his crew serve Arlington, Sachse, Garland, and the broader DFW metro from the Mesquite headquarters at 844 Dalworth Dr.
“In thirty years of plumbing across the DFW metro, including Arlington, the drain calls almost always come down to two things: tree roots in the older neighborhoods, and grease and hair buildup in the newer developments. We camera-inspect first, then choose hydro-jetting or snaking based on what we actually see — not on what gets you to the highest invoice.”

What Counts as an Emergency, and What Can Wait
We would rather tell you to go to bed than charge you an after-hours fee to look at something that will keep until morning. Here is our honest split.
| Situation | Our read |
|---|---|
| Burst or actively spraying pipe | Emergency. Shut the main and call |
| Water heater tank split, especially in an attic | Emergency. Shut the water and the power or gas |
| Sewage backing up into tubs, showers, or floor drains | Emergency. Stop using water in the house |
| No water at all in the house | Emergency, and often a main line issue |
| Slab leak you can hear running | Emergency. Shut the main |
| Gas smell | Not a plumbing call at all. Use the steps at the top of this page |
| One toilet clogged, another working | Usually waits. Shut its valve and stop using it |
| Water heater out, no leak | Usually waits. Cold showers beat an after-hours fee |
| Slow drain, dripping faucet, running toilet | Waits. Call during business hours |
| Water stain on a ceiling with nothing actively running | Usually waits, but same-day |
Call us either way. If it can wait, we will say so and book you for regular hours at regular rates.

Emergency Plumbing in Arlington, TX: Frequently Asked Questions
Have questions? We’ve got answers. Can’t find what you’re looking for? Give us a call anytime.
Yes. We come out for genuine emergencies outside normal hours, and an after-hours call carries a flat 199 dollar dispatch fee, stated on the phone before we come out. For same-day service at regular rates, call before noon on a weekday.
We are based in Mesquite, about 45 minutes from Arlington before traffic. Shops based in Arlington can usually get there sooner. If water is still running and you cannot stop it, call whoever can reach you first. If the water is off and you need the problem found and fixed properly, call us.
Arlington Water Utilities, at 817-459-5900, answered at any hour. Use that line for a suspected main break, a leak in the street or at the meter, or a sewer overflow. A break between the meter and your house is yours to repair, and that one we can fix.
Shut off the water at the main before things thaw. Ice splits the pipe while everything is frozen, and the flood comes when the ice plug melts and the water reaches the split all at once. If you lost pressure during a freeze, treat that as the warning and close the main.
Yes. Waste coming up into a tub or floor drain means the main line is blocked, not a single fixture. Stop running water everywhere in the house and call. If sewage is also in the street, call the city at 817-459-5900 too. A camera inspection at 150 to 400 dollars shows the cause once the line is cleared.
Leave the building immediately with everyone and every pet. Do not touch light switches, appliances or any phone inside, and do not open or close any gas valve. From a safe distance outside, call 911, then call Atmos Energy at 866-322-8667, the gas utility for Arlington. Call a plumber only after Atmos or the fire department says it is safe.
