Emergency Plumbing in Coppell, TX
If water is running and you cannot stop it, do this before you keep reading.
Shut off the water at your home’s main valve. For one fixture, close the stop valve under the sink or behind the toilet. If the house valve will not turn, the City of Coppell’s utility crew can shut the water off at the meter for you. Coppell meters usually sit in a meter can near the curb, next to the sidewalk at the front of the property, under a round black plastic lid.
If you smell gas, leave the building first with everyone in it, including pets. Do not flip switches or use your phone inside. Once you are outside and away, call 911. Then call Atmos Energy at 866-322-8667. Atmos is the gas utility for Coppell and will make the line safe. Call us at 214-918-6109 for the repair once the area has been cleared.
For everything else, call 214-918-6109.

What Fails in Coppell Homes
About 68 percent of Coppell’s homes were built in the 1980s and 1990s, according to the Census Bureau’s 2019 to 2023 American Community Survey, so most of its plumbing is now 25 to 45 years old. That age decides most of the emergencies.
Attic water heaters
Many two-story homes from that era put the water heater in the attic. When an attic tank fails, you find out through the ceiling.
Close the cold water valve at the top of the tank, turn off its gas or breaker, and check whether the drain pan is full or cracked. A tank leaking from the body needs replacing, and we install State water heaters.
Polybutylene supply pipe
Gray plastic supply line was used in some homes built from the late 1970s to the mid 1990s. It fails at fittings with no warning, often inside a wall or ceiling.
Copper under the slab
Twenty-five to forty-five years under a slab is when pinhole and slab leaks start. A leak you can hear running with every fixture off is soaking the ground under the foundation. Electronic leak detection runs 300 to 500 dollars and finds it before any concrete is opened.
Cast iron and early plastic drains
Scale, cracks and joint separation, and the city’s own sewer page adds tree roots.
Coppell's After-Hours Water Line
The City of Coppell’s Utility Operations Division takes emergency water and sewer leak calls at 972-462-5150. After normal hours, on weekends and on holidays, that call pages the on-call technician, who should call you back within fifteen minutes.
You leave your name and phone number. If you cannot get through, the city also lists Coppell Police Dispatch at 972-304-3610. The on-call crew cannot answer billing questions.
Meet James Armstrong
Meet the Master Plumber Serving Coppell: James Armstrong
James Armstrong has been a Mesquite-resident Master Plumber since 1995. What began as helping neighbors fix leaky faucets turned into a career — and eventually a family business, built on one simple rule: treat people right, do the job with integrity, and always stand behind your work. Today, James and his crew serve Coppell, Sachse, Garland, and the broader DFW metro from the Mesquite headquarters at 844 Dalworth Dr.
“In thirty years of plumbing across the DFW metro, including Coppell, the drain calls almost always come down to two things: tree roots in the older neighborhoods, and grease and hair buildup in the newer developments. We camera-inspect first, then choose hydro-jetting or snaking based on what we actually see — not on what gets you to the highest invoice.”

What Counts as an Emergency, and What Can Wait
In a Coppell plumbing emergency, some calls go to the city first and some go to a plumber. Here is which is which.
| Call the City of Coppell | Call a plumber | |
|---|---|---|
| Water in the street or at the meter can | Yes. Utility Operations, 972-462-5150. After hours it pages the on-call technician | No. A plumber cannot repair a city main |
| Burst pipe and the house valve will not turn | The city’s technicians can turn the meter off so you can repair your own line | For the repair itself, once the water is off |
| Sewage overflowing from the city cleanout near the property line | Yes. The city asks you to report it to Utility Operations | Not first |
| Sewage inside the house, cleanout and street dry | Not first | Yes. A camera inspection at 150 to 400 dollars shows the cause once the line is cleared |
| Gas off after a leak | The on-call inspector checks the repair, then releases it to Atmos. You call Atmos to reconnect | A licensed plumber registered with the City of Coppell gets the permit, makes the repair and calls the city’s emergency hotline, 972-304-3551, for the inspection |
| Leak ran up the bill | Utility Billing may adjust the water portion once every 24 months, with the Leak Repair Affidavit | Keep the repair invoice. The city asks for it |
If you smell gas, none of this comes first. Leave the house and call 911 from outside, then Atmos Energy.
