What Actually Goes Wrong in Rockwall

Burst pipes after a freeze

North Texas usually gets one or two Arctic events between December and February.

The thing most homeowners do not expect is that the flood does not happen during the freeze. It happens on the thaw. Ice expands and splits the pipe while everything is frozen solid, so nothing leaks yet. Then the temperature climbs, the ice plug melts, and the water finds the split all at once, often while nobody is home.

If you lost water pressure during a freeze, that is the warning, and the right move is to shut the main before things warm up rather than waiting to see what happens.

Attic water heater failures

North Texas builds slab-on-grade, so there is nowhere below the house to put a water heater. In Rockwall’s 1990s and newer construction they sit in attics and upper-floor closets.

When one of those lets go it does not make a puddle, it drains the tank through the ceiling. If you see a stain spreading below an attic unit, shut the cold inlet and the power or gas immediately.

Sewer backups

Backing up into a tub or shower means the blockage is downstream of the whole house, not in one fixture. Stop running water anywhere in the house, including the washing machine, because every gallon you send down makes it worse.

Slab leaks running under the foundation

Rockwall sits on the same expansive clay as the rest of the metro, which works on the copper and drain lines through the slab until something gives.

A leak you can actually hear running with everything shut off is soaking the ground under your foundation, and that is worth calling about tonight.

Main line breaks

Rockwall is supplied by the North Texas Municipal Water District. A break between the meter and the house is yours, and it usually shows up as no pressure plus a wet spot in the yard that has no reason to be there.

What After Hours Actually Costs

A flat $199 dispatch fee for after-hours and weekend calls. We say it on the phone before we come out.

That is the whole disclosure. We are not going to quote you a low number now and discover an emergency premium later, and we are not going to advertise round-the-clock service and then explain the surcharge when the invoice arrives. If the job is more than the dispatch, you get a flat written quote before work starts, same as any other day.

Calls that come in before noon during business hours can usually be reached the same day at regular rates.

Shut the Water Off First

Before you do anything else, if water is actively running where it should not be, stop it at the source. This is the single most useful thing you can do while help is on the way, and it is the difference between a repair and a repair plus a restoration.

If you cannot find or turn the main, call us and we will talk you through it on the phone while we are on the way.

Where the shutoffs are in most Rockwall homes:

Under the fixture

Sinks and toilets have their own small valve on the supply line behind or beneath them. Turn it clockwise until it stops. For one leaking fixture this is all you need.

Water heater

There is a shutoff on the cold inlet at the top of the tank. Close it, and if the tank is leaking, kill the power at the breaker or turn a gas unit’s control to off.

The whole house

Most Rockwall homes have a main shutoff where the supply enters, commonly in the garage, at an exterior wall, or in a box near the front of the property line.

Turn it clockwise. It is worth walking outside right now, while nothing is wrong, and finding yours. In an actual emergency nobody wants to be hunting for it in the dark.

Meet James Armstrong

Meet the Master Plumber Serving Rowlett: James Armstrong

James Armstrong has been a Mesquite-resident Master Plumber since 1995. What began as helping neighbors fix leaky faucets turned into a career — and eventually a family business, built on one simple rule: treat people right, do the job with integrity, and always stand behind your work. Today, James and his crew serve Rowlett, Sachse, Garland, and the broader east DFW metro, with most calls dispatched and on-site within 25 minutes of the Mesquite headquarters at 844 Dalworth Dr.

“In thirty years working Rowlett, Garland, and the Lake Ray Hubbard side of the metro, the drain calls almost always come down to two things: tree roots in the older Rowlett neighborhoods near the lake, and grease and hair buildup in the newer developments off Liberty Grove and Schrade Road. We camera-inspect first, then choose hydro-jetting or snaking based on what we actually see — not on what gets you to the highest invoice.”

Yes. We run out of our shop at 844 Dalworth Dr in Mesquite, about 25 minutes from Rockwall past Rowlett. Calls that come in before noon during business hours can usually be reached the same day at regular rates. After hours and on weekends we charge a flat $199 dispatch fee, and we tell you that number on the phone before anyone gets in a truck.

A flat $199 dispatch fee for after-hours and weekend calls, stated on the phone before we come out. If the job needs more than the dispatch, you get a flat written quote before work starts. We do not add an emergency premium at invoice time.

In most Rockwall homes it is where the supply enters the house, commonly in the garage, along an exterior wall, or in a box near the front of the property line. Turn it clockwise to close. Individual sinks, toilets, and water heaters also have their own shutoffs. Find your main now, while nothing is wrong, rather than hunting for it in the dark during an actual emergency.

Shut off the main water supply before things thaw. Ice expands and splits pipe while everything is frozen, so nothing leaks yet, and the flood arrives on the thaw when the ice plug melts and water reaches the split all at once. If you lost pressure during a freeze, treat that as the warning and shut the main rather than waiting to see what happens.

Yes. Backing up into a tub or shower means the blockage is downstream of the whole house rather than in one fixture. Stop running water anywhere in the house, including the washing machine and dishwasher, because every gallon you send down makes it worse, then call 214-918-6109.

Leave the building immediately with everyone and every pet. Do not touch light switches, appliances, or any phone inside, and do not start a vehicle in the garage. Do not open or close any gas valve. From a safe distance outside, call 911, then call Atmos Energy at 866-322-8667, the natural gas provider for Rockwall. Do not go back inside until Atmos or the fire department says it is safe, and call a plumber only after that.

A burst or spraying pipe, a split water heater tank, sewage backing up into tubs or showers, no water in the house, or a slab leak you can hear running all warrant a call tonight. One clogged toilet with another working, a water heater that is out but not leaking, a slow drain, or a dripping faucet will almost always keep until morning. Call either way and we will tell you honestly which one you have.

Our friendly team is available 24/7 to help you.
