Meet James Armstrong

Meet the Master Plumber Behind the Work: James Armstrong

James Armstrong started in plumbing in Mesquite, TX in 1995 — as an apprentice, then as a Journeyman, and since the early 2000s as a Texas Master Plumber (License M-39428). He runs James Armstrong Plumbing from our shop at 844 Dalworth Dr., Suite 10. Same shop, same address, since 1995.

“The hydro jetting calls that go wrong are almost always jobs where someone applied 4,000 PSI to a pipe nobody inspected first. I’ve been called out to fix new leaks in homes that had a \$189 hydro jetting service the week before — the line was already failing and the pressure finished it off. Camera inspection takes 30 to 60 minutes. It tells us what the line can take, and it tells you what we’re seeing. Every main sewer line jetting job starts there.”

James Armstrong, Master Plumber  •  Texas License M-39428  •  Founder, James Armstrong Plumbing

30+ years of east DFW sewer field work means James has hydro-jetted thousands of lines in Mesquite and the surrounding service area — and has refused to jet plenty more. The pre-1980 cast iron stacks and clay sewer mains that fill Mesquite’s older neighborhoods don’t all handle 3,500+ PSI water the same way. Knowing which ones do and which ones don’t is the difference between a fix and a callback.

Every main sewer line hydro jetting job at James Armstrong Plumbing starts with a camera inspection. James personally reviews the camera footage before any pressure is applied. The recommendation — jet, jet cautiously, or don’t jet at all — is based on what the camera actually shows.

James Armstrong Plumbing is BBB A+ accredited since 2018 and a Mesquite Chamber of Commerce member. Family-owned, operating from the same Mesquite shop since 1995.

How It Works

How Hydro Jetting Actually Works

Hydro jetting pushes high-pressure water through a specialized nozzle threaded into the drain or sewer line. Residential machines typically operate between 3,500 and 4,000 PSI at 4 to 18 gallons per minute. Commercial trailer-mounted units go higher — up to 4,000+ PSI at 18 to 25 GPM for heavy commercial lines.

The nozzle does the work. Forward-facing jets cut through the clog and strip the pipe wall clean. Rear-facing jets propel the hose forward through the pipe while pushing debris back toward the access point where it flushes out. Different nozzle types handle different problems: a chisel nozzle for hard scale, a rotating nozzle for grease coating, a cutting head with retractable blades for root masses.

The fundamental difference between hydro jetting and mechanical cabling (snaking): cabling punches a hole through a clog. Jetting strips it off the wall. After a jetting job done correctly, the inside of the pipe is clean — not just open. That’s why jetting handles recurring grease, scale, and root problems that snaking can only temporarily clear.

How It Works

Why We Camera-Inspect Before Jetting

Hydro jetting at 3,500 to 4,000 PSI is safe — for pipes in sound condition. For pipes that are already failing, that same pressure can blow holes through corroded walls, separate weakened joints, and accelerate failures that the pipe would have survived with mechanical cabling.

Pre-1980 Mesquite homes commonly have cast iron drain stacks and clay sewer mains. Both are usable for hydro jetting when sound. Both can be at exactly the wall-thickness or joint-integrity point where blind jetting creates new leaks. The only way to know which condition your pipes are in is to look first.

Every main sewer line hydro jetting job at James Armstrong Plumbing starts with a camera inspection. We send the camera in, document the pipe condition, and decide together with you: jet, or recommend a different approach. If the camera shows the line can’t safely take 3,500+ PSI, we’ll tell you that — and we’ll recommend mechanical cabling, spot repair, CIPP lining, or replacement based on what we actually see.

Some discount-coupon hydro jetting services skip the inspection and jet first. That’s how customers end up with new leaks after a $189 jetting job — the line was already failing and the pressure finished it off. Camera inspection adds 30 to 60 minutes on-site. It’s the difference between a fix and a disaster.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hydro jetting uses high-pressure water — typically 3,500 to 4,000 PSI at 4 to 18 gallons per minute for residential lines — pushed through a specialized nozzle threaded into the sewer or drain line. The nozzle directs jets forward to cut buildup and backward to propel the hose through the pipe while flushing debris out behind it. Unlike mechanical cabling (which punches a hole through a clog), hydro jetting strips the inside wall of the pipe clean, removing grease coating, scale, and root mat that cabling leaves behind.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no — it depends on what the camera shows. Pre-1980 Mesquite homes commonly have cast iron drain stacks and clay sewer mains. If the cast iron still has reasonable wall thickness, jetting is safe and very effective at removing scale. If the cast iron has corroded to paper-thin walls, jetting can blow holes through the pipe. Same for clay: if the joints are still intact, jetting cleans roots out cleanly. If the line is partially collapsed or bellying severely, jetting can make things worse. We always camera-inspect first. If the camera shows the line can't safely take 3,500+ PSI, we recommend a different approach — and we tell you that before any pressure is applied.

Mechanical cabling (snaking) is the right call for one-off blockages caused by a discrete object (toy, root ball, paper buildup) and for fixture-level clogs (single sink, single toilet). Hydro jetting is the right call for grease-coated kitchen drains, scale buildup in older cast iron, root mat across multiple joints, and recurring backups where snaking opens the line briefly but the clog returns. Cabling punches a hole through buildup; jetting strips it off the pipe wall. For most main sewer line cleanings on lines we've never inspected, we recommend camera inspection first, then the technique that fits what we see.

Residential hydro jetting typically operates between 3,500 and 4,000 PSI at 4 to 18 gallons per minute, with the specific nozzle selected for the job (different nozzles for grease, roots, scale, descaling). Commercial trailer-mounted units go higher (up to 4,000+ PSI at 18-25 GPM). That pressure is safe for sound pipes in good condition. It is NOT safe for pipes that are already failing — which is why we camera-inspect first. The pressure rating that matters isn't on the jet machine; it's on the pipe wall thickness.

Camera inspection: 30 to 60 minutes on-site. Single fixture drain jetting (kitchen line, bathroom branch): 30 to 60 minutes. Main sewer line jetting from a cleanout to the city tap: typically 1 to 2 hours including post-jet camera verification. Commercial or heavily root-intruded lines can run 2 to 4 hours. We give a specific timeline in the flat-rate quote after the camera inspection — no surprise extensions.

It reduces recurring clogs significantly because it removes the buildup mechanical cabling leaves behind — the grease film, the scale layer, the root mat that holds the next clog together. But hydro jetting doesn't prevent the underlying cause. If your kitchen drain has a grease problem, jetting buys you 6 to 18 months before the buildup returns. If your sewer line has root intrusion at a separated joint, jetting buys you 1 to 3 years before roots regrow through the same joint. Permanent fixes require addressing the source — grease trap installation for kitchens, joint sealing or section repair for roots.

Our friendly team is available 24/7 to help you.

What the Camera Shows → What We Recommend

What the Camera Finds

Our Recommendation

Sound pipe with grease buildup, scale, or surface roots — wall thickness intact

HYDRO JET — this is exactly what the technique is designed for. Strip the wall clean, flush debris out, post-jet camera verification.

Heavy root mat at one or more joints, line otherwise structurally sound

HYDRO JET with a root-cutting nozzle — followed by camera identification of the entry joints for follow-up sealing or spot repair. Without the follow-up, roots return in 1-3 years.

Cast iron drain stack with visible corrosion but apparent wall thickness

HYDRO JET CAUTIOUSLY — reduced pressure (2,500-3,000 PSI instead of 4,000), no rotating heads, careful nozzle selection. Or mechanical cabling if the camera shows the wall can’t take any pressure.

Cast iron drain stack with paper-thin walls or visible pin-holes

DO NOT JET. Mechanical cabling only — and the line should be planned for replacement on a timeline. Jetting will blow holes through this pipe.

Partially collapsed sewer line or severe bellying (sagging)

DO NOT JET. Jetting can’t fix structural problems and may worsen the collapse. Recommend traditional excavation or pipe bursting depending on the extent — see our sewer line page for details.

Comparison

Hydro Jetting vs Mechanical Cabling: Which Technique Fits Your Problem?

Factor

Hydro Jetting

Mechanical Cabling (Snaking)

How it works

3,500-4,000 PSI water strips the pipe wall clean and flushes debris out

Rotating cable with cutting head punches a hole through the clog

Best for

Grease coating, scale buildup, root mat, recurring clogs in the same line

Discrete blockages (toy, root ball, paper buildup), fixture-level clogs

Long-term result

Pipe wall left clean — clog less likely to return quickly

Hole punched through clog — wall coating remains, clogs often return

Risk on compromised pipes

Higher — pressure can damage corroded or weakened pipes. Camera inspection required first.

Lower — minimal pressure, cable navigates around weak spots

Time on-site (residential main line)

60-120 minutes including pre-jet inspection and post-jet verification

30-60 minutes typically

Equipment

Trailer-mounted or truck-mounted jetter, specialized nozzles, water supply

Rotating drum with steel cable, interchangeable cutting heads

Works on grease coating?

Yes — strips grease completely from the pipe wall

Only partially — cable spins through center of grease, wall coating remains

Use when

Recurring same-location clogs, kitchen drain problems, root mat, scale, preventive maintenance for older homes

First-time clog at a specific location, fixture clogs, blockages caused by discrete objects
