Two Small Cities, One Long Shared History

Hutchins and Wilmer sit next to each other in southern Dallas County, and their histories are genuinely intertwined rather than just geographically close. Both were founded on the Houston and Texas Central Railway line that came through in 1872.

Both stayed small while the rest of Dallas County grew around them, and today they are two of the smallest incorporated cities in the county, with roughly 5,600 people in Hutchins and about 5,000 in Wilmer. They even consolidated their school districts decades ago and built a shared school between the two towns.

Because the two cities are adjacent, similar in size, and served the same way from our shop, we cover both on one page rather than splitting nearly identical information across two. If you are in either city, everything here applies to you.

Wilmer Incorporated Because It Could Not Get Water

Wilmer’s founding story is a plumbing story, and it is a stark one. On July 4, 1929, a fire destroyed most of Wilmer’s business district, including one of its two banks. Fire crews arrived, but the town’s shallow wells could not pump enough water to fight the blaze. The lack of a real water system left Wilmer with one of the highest fire insurance rates in the country.

Wilmer incorporated in 1945 largely to fix that, and its first mayor ran on a platform of installing a public water system.

Even then, the expense delayed it for years.

Both cities are on modern municipal water now, so this is history rather than a current condition. But it is worth knowing that these are communities where water infrastructure arrived late and was hard-won. Some of the housing stock predates or barely postdates those systems, which means original supply lines, drain lines, and shutoff valves in the oldest homes here can be genuinely old. We ask about the age of the home when you call.

Industrial and Commercial Work Too

Hutchins in particular carries a heavier concentration of industrial and manufacturing businesses than most cities its size, along with warehouse and distribution operations along the Interstate 45 corridor. We are licensed for commercial work as well as residential, so if you manage a facility rather than a house, the same number reaches us.

We do not run full 24/7 service, but we take calls before noon on weekdays for same-day scheduling, and after-hours calls for a $132 (5–10 PM) or $184 (10 PM–8 AM) fee.

Meet James Armstrong

Meet the Master Plumber Serving Hutchins and Wilmer: James Armstrong

James Armstrong has been a Mesquite-resident Master Plumber since 1995. What began as helping neighbors fix leaky faucets turned into a career — and eventually a family business, built on one simple rule: treat people right, do the job with integrity, and always stand behind your work. Today, James and his crew serve Hutchins and Wilmer, Sachse, Garland, and the broader east DFW metro, with most calls dispatched and on-site within 25 minutes of the Mesquite headquarters at 844 Dalworth Dr.

“In thirty years of plumbing across the DFW metro, including Hutchins and Wilmer, the drain calls almost always come down to two things: tree roots in the older neighborhoods, and grease and hair buildup in the newer developments. We camera-inspect first, then choose hydro-jetting or snaking based on what we actually see — not on what gets you to the highest invoice.”
