A toilet is easy to ignore until it fails. A running tank wastes water every day. A slow leak at the base can rot a subfloor before you ever see it. The good news is that most toilet problems start small, and a few minutes of checking each month catches them early.
This checklist walks you through what to look at, what is normal, and what means it is time to call a plumber. James Armstrong is a licensed Master Plumber in Mesquite with over 30 years of hands-on work. These are the same checks he runs on a service call.
Clean and Disinfect
Start clean so you can see problems clearly. A dirty bowl hides mineral buildup and early cracks.
Wipe down the bowl, tank lid, seat, and base with a disinfectant cleaner.
Scrub the inside of the bowl with a toilet brush, including under the rim.
Clean around the base and the bolt caps, where water from a slow leak tends to show first.
Check for Leaks
Leaks are the most expensive toilet problem and the easiest to miss. Two quick tests find most of them.
Visual check: Look at the floor around the base after you clean. Any water, staining, or soft flooring means water is escaping.
Dye test: Put a few drops of food coloring in the tank. Wait 30 minutes without flushing. If color shows up in the bowl, the flapper is leaking and letting water pass through.
A silent tank leak can waste hundreds of gallons a month. If your water bill climbed without a clear reason, start here.
Inspect the Flapper and Flush
The flapper is the rubber seal at the bottom of the tank. It wears out and is the most common toilet repair.
Flush and watch how the bowl drains. A strong, complete flush is what you want.
If the water rises high or drains slowly, you may have a partial clog in the trap or the line.
If the tank keeps running or refills on its own, the flapper is not sealing and should be replaced.
Check the Water Level
The water level in the tank controls how well the toilet flushes.
Lift the tank lid and find the fill line marked on the overflow tube or the fill valve.
The water should sit at or just below that line. Too low means a weak flush. Too high means water is spilling into the overflow and running constantly.
Adjust the float if needed. If it will not hold the right level, the fill valve may be worn.
Prevent Problems Before They Start
Most clogs and breaks come from a few habits. These keep the whole system healthy.
Flush only toilet paper and human waste. Wipes, cotton, and paper towels do not break down and cause clogs, even the ones labeled flushable.
Keep a flange plunger nearby and clear minor clogs early, before they pack tight.
Do the full checklist once a month. It takes about ten minutes.
Wear gloves and eye protection when you use cleaning chemicals.
When to Call a Plumber
Some things are not a DIY fix. Call a licensed plumber if you see any of these.
Water at the base of the toilet that returns after you dry it. This points to a failed wax ring or a cracked flange.
A toilet that rocks or shifts when you sit down.
Repeated clogs, gurgling, or slow drains across more than one fixture, which can signal a main line issue.
Any crack in the bowl or tank.
